Syro-Malabar Catholic Church

The Syro-Malabar Church is an Apostolic Church which traces its origin to St. Thomas, the Apostle, who landed at Cranganore (Muziris) in 52 AD and founded seven Christian communities in Kerala, India. The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is one of the 22 Eastern (Oriental) Catholic Churches in full communion with Rome. It is the second largest Eastern Catholic Church after the Ukrainian Church and the largest of the Saint Thomas Christian (Nazrani) denominations with 4.6 million believers. It is a suijuris Church governed by the Synod of Bishops headed by the Major Archbishop. The Syro-Malabar Church, with its deep-rooted spirituality and high rate of vocations to priesthood and religious life, is often listed among the most vibrant Catholic communities in the world. The Syro-Malabar Church is actively involved in educational, social and health-related mission activities. The Syro-Malabar Church runs 4860 educational, 262 ecclesiastical and 2614 health and charitable institutions in India.

People from all over India began to migrate to United States in the 1960s. Keralites, especially Syro-Malabar Catholics arrived in U. S. only in the early seventies and settled down throughout the country. Appealing weather conditions and oil boom in the eighties that created immense job opportunities prompted a substantial number of Syrian Catholics to move to Houston from other parts of the country.

For spiritual sustenance, the pietistic Syrian Catholics became members of the local Latin parishes. They utilized the services of local parishes for attending Holy Mass, children's catechism classes and other spiritual needs. By the end of the eighties, there were hundreds of Syrian Catholics successfully settled down in Houston metropolitan area.

St. Kuriakose Syro-Malabar Catholic Community

St. Kuriakose Catholic community is a Syro Malabar Catholic Mission under St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago which was established in the United States of America by His Holiness Pope John Paul II on March 13, 2001. Recognizing the spiritual needs of a sizeable population of Syro Malabar Catholics in the Northern Houston region, the St. Kuriakose Syro Malabar Catholic Mission of North Houston was formed in February of 2015. It is now a vibrant and growing community that serves over 20 families in North Houston. The community Celebrates Holy Qurbana every Sunday at 5:00 PM. The community reinforces faith formation as a critical aspect by providing a platform for the younger generation in the form of Catechism classes, youth groups and retreats for spiritual reflection and encouragement.

Our Mission

Our mission is to grow as a parish that serves the spiritual needs of the Syro Malabar community in North Houston and to become an exemplar community of faith that promotes spiritual growth, the sacraments, community service and outreach, social justice and faith-seeking intellectual development.

We are nourished by the seven sacraments – Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick and the mutual support and love of genuine Christian community.

We are an ever growing and evolving community, steeped in a rich history and diverse culture.

We are called to pass our faith to the generations to come, so that we may continue building the kingdom of God by bringing others closer to Christ.
